Joanne Thorne Arnold is an oil painter who specializes in color. For 40 years her canvases have portrayed everything from the figurative to the abstract. After graduating from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz in 1984, real life education as an artist began. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, Joanne studied and rented studio space in a former tattoo parlor from the late Michael Tanzer.

Michael was a figurative painter who was a master using light and color in the emotive and the expressive. Joanne truly was a student for those 20 years and followed his philosophy of always learning.

Since the 21st century, Joanne has continued her journey as a painter. She has received several artist residencies that accelerated her growth as a colorist. It taught her discipline. She has exhibited solo and group shows throughout the U.S.

In 2008, Thorne Arnold converted her garage to a studio and it’s been an adventure ever since. She continues to stretch the boundaries with her intuitive use of color and has added mixed media and glass fusing to her repertoire. She is always inspired and connected to the landscape.

In 2019, through the Dryden Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island, two of her paintings were featured in the mini-series “NOS4A2” which was viewed on the AMC Channel.

Joanne lives in upstate NY and loves the changing of all the seasons. When not painting or creating she is enjoying life with her husband and two Shelties. She loves to garden, travel, read, laugh, entertain, and play the banjo.
